Sunday Music

Music is a vital component of both our worship and outreach programs.  Working with the music director, the minister,  and other committees, the Music & Arts Committee is responsible for the support of all elements of our music and arts programs in the spiritual context of worship and in cultural outreach to the community.

Under the leadership of Music Director Dr. Stephen James, the Eliot Church Choir welcomes members of our high school youth group and performs a variety of anthems on several Sundays  during  the church year. The selections reflect a wide-ranging choral repertoire, including contemporary, spirituals and classical liturgical pieces.    Dr. James plays piano and organ preludes and postludes, hymn accompaniment and musical interludes, selected in consultation with the minister to reflect the theme of the day.  Other professional  soloists join Steve throughout the year.

The Eliot Church Ukestra, a multi-generational group of mixed string players directed by Rev. Adam and Lee Manuel, is a regular presence in our music program, both within the worship service and as an important part of community outreach activities.  The church sponsors an annual youth “Coffee House” at which young people of middle- and high-school age throughout the community  are invited to display their artistic, musical and theatrical talents. This festive evening concludes with a pizza supper..

The Eliot Church concert series hosts three programs each year, including spring and fall classical concerts and a holiday performance of the Mudville Madrigal Singers.  Recent soloists have included Stephen James, piano, double bass soloist Volkan Orhan, Peter Zay, cello,  and other violin, piano and cello soloists. These events are followed by a wine and cheese reception in the church parlor.
