Eliot Church
Religious Education Program

The religious education program of the Eliot Church is a voluntary effort of the congregation.  The Religious Education Committee, the minister, and the church members provide guidance and staff all religious education programs.

Objectives of the Religious Education Program at the Eliot Church:

  • To explore our religious and Biblical heritage
  • To explore other religious traditions
  • To provide an opportunity for worship
  • To give each child a sense of belonging to a church community that cares about him/her
  • To help each child develop a sense of commitment toward creating a more just, compassionate, and free world

Through these goals, we hope to nurture our children's religious growth and broaden their understanding of themselves as religious persons following in the traditions summarized by the historic Ames Covenant.

Program Overview

Sunday School classes meet during the regular church service.  On most Sundays, children in kindergarten through grade eight attend the first twenty minutes of the worship service and then go to their classrooms.  Children in grades K-2 meet downstairs in the church building.  Children in the older grades are escorted to Memorial Hall which is a half block away on the other side of Eliot Street.

The Church School year begins the Sunday after Labor Day and concludes with celebration of Children's Sunday on the second Sunday in June.  On holiday and school vacation weekends a special church school activity is offered in lieu of regular classes.  Nursery care for children ages 1-5 is provided every Sunday.
